What is the 2008 Excellence in Energy Performance Award?

The Excellence in Energy Performance Award was created by the Oncor Electric Delivery ENERGY STAR Homes Program to reward homebuilders who construct highly energy-efficient homes that exceed ENERGY STAR® specifications. This annual award recognizes homebuilders who construct the largest volume of homes with the highest average HERS Index rating.

Who is eligible to win the award?

Eligibility for the 2008 Excellence in Energy Performance Awards is based on participation in the 2007 and 2008 Oncor Electric Delivery ENERGY STAR Homes Programs.  All Program homebuilders are eligible to win the award based on their cumulative average HERS Index rating.

How are the winners chosen?

Participating homebuilders are divided into five categories based on the number of homes they build: 1-15 homes, 16-75 homes, 76-250 homes, 251-600 homes, and 650 or more homes.  The HERS Index scores of all ENERGY STAR homes constructed by each homebuilder in 2007 are averaged to calculate a cumulative score that represents the average energy efficiency of a homebuilder’s product line of single-family homes.  The scores are ranked and the homebuilder with the highest average HERS Index rating from each category is identified as the winner.

When were the 2008 winners announced and recognized?

Winners of the 2008 Excellence in Energy Performance Award were announced in June 2008 through press releases, and media alerts.  A recognition luncheon will be held in Grapevine in July.

How are the 2008 winners affecting the housing market in Texas?

ENERGY STAR specifications in Texas require that a home receive a HERS index rating of 85 or lower, equivalent to 15 percent above the 2004 IRC. Collectively, winners of the 2008 Excellence in Energy Performance Award averaged 28 percent above code. By exceeding ENERGY STAR specifications, recipients of the award are raising the standards for energy-efficient home construction in Texas.  Through the construction of energy-efficient homes, these winners are decreasing our demand for energy, decreasing the cost of homeownership for consumers and contributing to bluer Texas skies.
