What is the 2009 Excellence in Energy Performance Award?
The Excellence in Energy Performance Award was created by the Oncor ENERGY STAR®Homes Program to reward homebuilders who construct highly energy-efficient homes that exceed ENERGY STAR specifications. This annual award recognizes homebuilders who construct the largest volume of homes with the lowest average HERS Index ranking.
Who is eligible to win the award?
Eligibility for the 2009 Excellence in Energy Performance Award is based on participation in the 2008 and 2009 Oncor ENERGY STAR Homes Program. All Program homebuilders are eligible to win the award based on their cumulative average HERS Index ranking.
How are the winners chosen?
Participating homebuilders are divided into two categories based on the number of homes they build: 1-50 homes, Custom Homebuilder; 50 or more homes, Volume Homebuilder. The HERS Index rankings of all ENERGY STAR homes constructed by each homebuilder in 2008 are averaged to calculate a cumulative HERS Index ranking that represents the average energy efficiency of a homebuilder’s product line of single-family homes. Homebuilders are ranked and the homebuilder with the lowest average HERS Index ranking from each category in each geographical market is identified as the winner. Geographical markets are designated as: North Texas, East Texas, Central Texas, Austin, West Texas, and Dallas/Fort Worth.
When were the 2009 winners announced and recognized?
Winners of the 2009 Excellence in Energy Performance Award were announced at The Future of ENERGY STAR New Homes workshops, hosted by Oncor June 22 through June 26, 2009. The workshop and award recognition ceremonies were open to all homebuilders and the press.
How are the 2009 winners affecting the housing market in Texas?
ENERGY STAR specifications in Texas require that a home receive a HERS Index ranking of 85 or lower, equivalent to 15 percent more efficient than the 2004 IRC code. By exceeding ENERGY STAR specifications, recipients of the award are raising the standards for energy-efficient home construction in Texas. Through the construction of energy-efficient homes, these winners are decreasing our demand for energy, decreasing the cost of homeownership for consumers and contributing to cleaner, bluer Texas skies.
